What is Pedodontics?

The Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Bulent Ecevit University Faculty of Dentistry provides didactic and clinical education on preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children. This education is provided for dental students and residents in the pediatric dentistry specialty program.

Full and part time faculties are involved in the didactic training of the dental students in the 3rd and 4th years for undergraduate teaching. In addition, the faculty is responsible for clinical education of undergraduate students in the 4th and 5th years.

After completing a five-year dental school curriculum, three additional years of rigorous training are required in order to become a pediatric dentist. This specialized program of study and hands-on experience prepares pediatric dentists to meet the needs of infants, children and adolescents, including persons with special health care needs. Pediatric dentists promote the dental health of children as well as serve as educational resources for parents. It is recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) that a dental visit should occur within six months after the presence of the first tooth or by a child’s first birthday. Early detection is essential to maintain oral health, modify aberrant habits, and treat as needed and as simply as possible. Additionally, parents are given a program of preventative home care (brushing/flossing/fluorides), a caries risk assessment, information on finger, thumb, and pacifier habits, advice on preventing injuries to the mouth and teeth of children, diet counseling, and information on growth and development.

Our mission is to improve the oral health of infants, children, adolescents and their families with special emphasis given to improving the oral health of children with special health care needs.
